Cloud Computing - Common Misconceptions

Cloud computing is the utilization of hardware and software resources to provide services over the Internet. With a lot of talk about its impact on the business, there are many myths and misconceptions surrounding its usage. Some of those myths are discussed in detail below.  
This is the most common apprehension about cloud computing. Most of them think that there is no security for the data stored in cloud applications. In truth, it is very difficult to completely secure your data anywhere. Although a business is accomplished with the trust on their online banking platform’s security, a similar trust is not implemented on the business application’s security. In fact cloud computing is a boon for small and medium businesses as they would not have been able to afford top level information hub and security technology, which is provided by the cloud technology. To believe that instead of using a cloud based application you can host your own application, is like not trusting online web banking and stashing cash in the office desk.  

Not Enough Bandwidth:
There is a huge demand for cloud based applications as it offers a number of business solutions. This in turn increases the demand for higher bandwidth. Some even believe that their network would not be able to cope with the stress produced by cloud applications. Contradicting this thought, Netflix is thinking to change completely into a cloud based streaming service. They are providing both cloud based streaming and a physical mail delivery system. They are so satisfied with their streaming via cloud that, talks on dropping the physical mail delivery system is going on. As the demand for more bandwidth is ever increasing, new technological innovations are providing larger bandwidth than before. Usage of fiber optic networks in Kansas City and in Germany is the latest technological innovation to provide larger bandwidth.

Dual Point Failure:
Some even think that cloud based applications would suffer from failure to connect to - your service provider and your internet connection. If you have a problem in connecting to your service provider, then the fear of failure might creep in. However, most cloud based business applications would have a better uptime than any self hosted network, which is almost 100% uptime.

Slower and Less Reliable:
Another delusion is that once you place an important application on the cloud, it tends to be slower and less reliable than it was on the Office network. In fact with proper assessment the application should work normally. The most important thing is to upgrade your office internet connection. The internet speed at office has to be on par with the server’s at the data centers that consist of newer hardware.

More Expensive:
In any business cost cutting is an important part of development, however, keeping that in mind and not opting to move towards cloud computing is a very bad decision. Moving IT services to cloud computing might be costlier than maintaining a network in office, but there are many factors to consider while looking at the cost. Factors such as downtime failure, poorly organized servers and lack of a more potent IT environment are far greater than the cost of cloud based applications. 

Only one way to do cloud computing:
Contradicting this myth there are a number of cloud computing models available. Most organizations set up IT services using a hybrid model which consists of both public and private clouds.
Cloud computing can significantly reduce costs and provide skilled IT operations. It has the capacity to change business models and help companies succeed in this fast and competitive world
